Marine Conservation Society Hi Phil - thanks for sharing this link. However, your comments on the site are misrepresentative. MCS is not campaigning for the repatriation of Chagos Islanders
because it is not within our remit. We actively support efforts to protect marine resources in the Chagos Archipelago now, as do some Chagos Islanders, and do not believe that current protection measures will prevent future repatriation.

My reply to the 'so called' Marine Conservation Society - being as you've chosen to comment on this post I put on yesterday rather than replying to the one I put to you about GM, Dams and Sea Temperature Rise issues, it's time I cut to the chase. - Admirable as your Cartmanesque business strategies are, within 20 years your views on Marine Conservation will be viewed by 99.999% of the global population in the same light as 'The earth is flat' and 'That yellow shiny thing in the sky will not rise in the morning without sacrificing female virgins'!

The ocean around the Chagos Islands were sustainably fished for hundreds of years by the ancestors of the recently ethnically cleansed inhabitants. Due to modern societies governments quest for wealth from ever increasing amounts of tax paying consumer hungry people, how can you celebrate their demise for our short term gain. Boy do you have issues and have them mixed up! No, it is not because they are black, and saying it is so does not mean it is true.
ReplyDeleteEveryone agrees that it was wrong to remove the Chagossians but at a recent meeting in London, organised by Chagossian supporters, the Chagossians made it VERY clear that they do not want to return to live in Chagos - they want - and deserve - compensation instead.
Would you condemn the Chagossians to have to live on these very very tiny islands which are barely above sea level in a period of uncertainty about sea level rise? How cruel and thoughtless you are. They can not go back to live in huts with no school, shops, hospital, port, airfield or economic basis.
And no, the islands were NOT sustainably fished by the Chagossians ancestors. Reading research papers available online shows that fish and turtle stocks were much lower at the time the Chagossians left than they are now.
Get real and forget the 'noble savage' idea. Whatever the colour of our skin, we ALL impact the planet. Find out what the Chagossians REALLY want - talk to them - and then help them. The don't need any latter day colonialists telling them what they need!
WRONG 100% . There's a very small minority of Chagosian's who don't want to go back. The Main Island, Diego Garcia (where they are all from is not in any danger from sea level rise. How do you know that the main island of Diego Garcia is not in danger from sea level rise? Do you think the Americans have found some way of stopping sea level rise locally. Or are you a climate change denier?
ReplyDeleteRe your comments about living sustainably on the islands. From other things you have said on your blog I would have expected better from you. Where in the world do people live sustainably. Take the Comores for example, where you might expect a people to live sustainably. The place is over fished and the poverty is terrible.
You have not even heeded your comments about population growth. A few thousand Chagossians on the islands now will be a lot more in a short time. Too many to live 'sustainably'!
This is a much more complex issue than many people realise. There are many issues to be considered, not least what the Chagossians themselves want. They said very clearly at the meeting in london that they didn't want to return but that they wanted compensation.
I can find no discussion about helping the Chagossians before the MPA was announced. If you read about the MPA you will see that it was created to preserve the tuna stocks which are in decline in the Indian Ocean. If the government were to say "ok lets scrap the MPA" the international tuna fishers are the only ones who would benefit. Not the Chagossians. There is a lot of information out there to read and assess and make an informed judgement about.

Your saying exactly the same things as the unelected president whom I've slayed on Facebook many times. Do your research and you'll find that the islands are the worse place for a conservation zone due to the currents that pass by it. But the best place for a base for global terrorism.
