Unofficial translation:
Parliamentarians demand safe departure for Assange
December 9th, 2018 / 12:19 pm
Members of the European Parliament and Bundestag are criticizing the violation of human rights in the middle of Europe as well as the current living conditions of Julian Assange.
MEPs from the EU Parliament and the Bundestag are concerned about the safety and health of Wikileaks activist Julian Assange. He must be allowed to leave his exile in Ecuador’s embassy in London to a country which is safe for him, they demanded among other issues in a letter published on Sunday to UN Secretary General António Guterres. If the Embassy would boot Assange out on the street without legal protection, an extradition and the possibility of life imprisonment in the USA would be inevitable.
“The constant and arbitrary threat posed by Britain and the United States, the years of imprisonment, the continuing separation from his family and friends, the prevention of adequate medical care and the recent isolation of Mr. Assange since March of this year are serious and outrageous violations of human rights in the heart of Europe,” criticized the predominantly left-leaning and green parliamentarians.
Ecuador has been trying for quite some time to end the embassy asylum that has lasted more than six years. President Lenín Moreno said Assange could leave the building without danger to his health and life. The British government has given assurances that the 47-year-old will not be extradited to a country where he faces the death penalty. Assange’s lawyer stressed that this did not mean that he would not be threatened with prosecution. The British authorities have already announced that they will arrest Assange for violating the law by fleeing to the embassy.
