Will Brazil elect Marina Silva as the world's first Green president?
Click above or here for the article in the Guardian, though is the main story in the Comments below?
Only time will tell!!

Except she isn't green. She was in PT, then ditched them to run for President as PV (Green) candidate, then ditched PV to run for President as Rede, then when that wasn't working joined PSB - which is one of the many parties in Brazil that doesn't really have a platform but which does dodgy deals from the centre with whichever party comes into power, much like PMDB.

I would do a bit more research on what is going on there rather than basing your opinion solely on this article which is only going to cause you pain when you find out more. Think about why she will win in the second round, why will the voters of the right transfer their votes to her, who else is in her party and why has the stock market gone up so much recently. She isn't a bad option but she is not the green messiah this article so desperately wants her to be.

Marina Silva's sponsoring "Socialist" Party is a misnomer - it is much less socialist than the governing Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) and will attract all the right-wing and anti-PT votes if there is a runoff with the PT in the 2nd round in November.Remember too that Marina is a devout Pentecostalist so a real worry is that the already-strong "Evangelical Lobby" in Congress will become really powerful and impose repressive social and family policies. -

Vote Green or hug a wok. Don't be afraid of progress. Let go of nonsense. Let's do it and vote Green.- Julianfyre
Marina Silva IS NOT the Green Party candidate, she WAS in the last election, but she changed party because of 'divergences' ..... The Brazilian Green Party's candidate is Eduardo Jorge.

I'm visiting family in Colombia at the moment and this week we had a guest from Brazil, a psychiatrist from Rio who is prepared to vote for Silva. For him the issue is the PT's corruption. I like Dilma Rousseff who like Lula da Silva hails from the syndicalist left but Marina Silva hails from the environmentalist left. How big a change is this? BIG, especially that much of Brazil's surge in the past twenty years comes from its export of agribusiness products such as soy and corn. After speaking with our Brazilian visitor I am thinking Silva is likely a second round winner in the round-off. Neves is the still the business sector candidate but he is unlikely to finish in the top two. So Rousseff vs. Silva? I'm thinking that the anti-Rousseff forces coalesce behind Silva but let's not deceive ourselves. Silva is unproven. The election may be hers to lose at the moment but six weeks still remain before Brazil votes. She may be peaking too early, she may make a gaffe and Brazilians may yet decide that Rousseff despite her lack of charisma is competent and more experienced to run Latin America's largest economy.- BacanaBloke
Very good points. BTW, corruption is a deeply-rooted problem across much of the political spectrum at all levels (federal. state, municipality), including in the opposition (eg the São Paulo metrô scandal), not helped by a very slow judiciary.

Marina Silva is not green! It represents the worst that exists in Brazil: a mix of bankers, Banco Itaú, and evangelicals who force the conversion of the Indians and steal traditional knowledge biopiracy, for companies of perfume, Natura perfumes. She intends to deliver the Central Bank for the bankers and the Amazon to international financial speculation! - SFEuro
I should have hasten to add that in 2010, Antanas Mockus of the Colombian Green Party who ran on an anti-corruption platform similar to Silva's was poised to win the presidency. He made the run-off where he was trounced by Juan Manuel Santos. The establishment will paint Silva as an extremist and that could tip the scales back toward Rousseff. And let's not forget that Lula-Rousseff era has lifted a third of Brazilians into the middle class. Once you are in the middle class, people then vote to preserve their gains not to lift others out of poverty. And I have little doubt JJ Rendón, the Venezuelan political consultant, will be hired by Rousseff. Rendón wins elections. - puryhempp
Marina Silva is the worst in Brazil! A messianic evangelical mixture funded by bankers, artists and international NGOs who think they know Brazil. Almost destroyed the Workers' Party and the Green Party. Now is manipulated by the largest television network in Brazil, Globo Network, and funded by the dirtiest bank in Brazil, Itaú! - puryhempp
Marina Silva is not green! She does biopiracy and is sponsored by NATURA perfume. Natura was fined 21 million by the Brazilian Institute of Environment for biopiracy! - farofa

I love the irony. In a short space of time Marina Silva with her (possible) green credentials is probably becoming a president of a country with a very large economy within a year.Whereas our Tony together with his team that was so well-beloved by the masses in a very large island has become a pariah in that same short space of time.
However, he has acquired a bomb-proof BMW after fucking the aussie car industry. - injinoo
"Will Brazil Elect Marina Silva as the World's First Green President?"No, sorry but they won't. -

Ms. Silva almost seems like the Barack Obama of South America. A lot of Hope and Change but if she is elected Brazil will find out has little competence. As a member of the BRIC Alliance she will be bullied about by the Russians and the Chinese. And each country will exploit Brazil's weakness and poverty to reach a foothold in the country. Ms. Silva seems way out of her depth to run a country as large as Brazil. But there are so many impoverished Brazilians she probably will be elected. And Brazil will be mired in another Socialist quagmire. Hope and Change... Poverty and Despair...- Julianfyre
Yes Paul, but 'don't worry' about the Russians or Chinese bulling her: she is well backed by the multimillionaire banking heir (the Setubal family 12th richest Brazilian family) - Neca: Maria Alice Setubal is making sure she does everything right, by personally coordinating her campaign ... also, with her vice Beto Albuquerque, farm-friendly-agribusiness stronghold, supporting her, the Socialist would not have a chance! ...... Any clue about what interest is she going to succumb? .. - SFEuro
I actually read in El País of Madrid a Brazilian describe her as "the Brazilian Obama."I have soured on her. She's homophobic. I can't trust an Evangelical to do the right thing in a country that has the highest per capita murder rate of LGTB in the world. - gerold

You can whine all you want, but time marches on and leaves you behind.Marina will be a great president for Brazil and signal a new era in world politics. It's a beautiful thing.
