In 1911, the Sherman Antitrust Act was passed to oppose entities, such as monopolies or cartels that would harm competition. In theory, the act broke up John D. Rockefeller’s monopoly, Standard Oil. However, the reality is that
the Rockefellers were able to maintain control over the spinoffs of Standard Oil, such as ExxonMobil and Chevron thus retain a dominating presence in the oil industry, despite the intent of the law.
